Postal Service closing 3,700 post offices

Postal Service considers closing 3,700 post offices nationwide

The study is looking at 100 post offices in Oklahoma.

The U.S. Postal Service is considering closing 100 post offices in Oklahoma, according to a list released Tuesday. The Oklahoma post offices are among 3,700 nationwide that are being studied for closure; in some towns, the Postal Service would designate local businesses to handle some postal services.

“Today, more than 35 percent of the Postal Service's retail revenue comes from expanded access locations such as grocery stores, drugstores, office supply stores, retail chains, self-service kiosks, ATMs and usps.com, open 24/7,” Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said. “Our customer's habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business.”
Thirty-three of the post offices on the study list are in the eastern Oklahoma district of Rep. Dan Boren, D-Muskogee.

"These facilities are extremely important to their communities,'' Boren said Tuesday. "We will use everything at our disposal to protect rural Oklahoma post offices. They are vital for seniors, veterans, and farmers in my district."
